Psycho-social dimensions in health care and promotion of health through physiotherapy

Course contents : The course deals with the following aspects:

• the place of health professions in modern society: overview of economic, regulatory and demographic evolutions in the last 50 years
• the history of medical practice: general outline with a view to highlighting the historical roots of some present-day currents of thought;
• basic concepts (health, disease, normal vs. pathological, healthy vs. unhealthy…): critical review of such concepts’ meanings and discussion of three fundamental dimensions of disease (physical, cultural and social viewpoints);
• sociological analysis of the role of disease and medical professions in society; Parsons, Freidson, Becker and Goffman’s models;
• social health gradients: nature, extent, evolution and explanatory hypotheses for understanding the persistence of inequalities in view of disease and death despite medical progress;
• the targets of medical sciences, i.e. the questions raised by the three main lines of medical activity:
- prevention: individual or collective responsibility? Should high-risk lifestyles be controlled?
- treatment: technological control of diseases, at what cost? The notion of recovery;
- listening: patient suffering – what role for health professionals?
• health professionals’ everyday practice: contribution of other lecturers from the Faculty (general practitioners, specialists, dentists, pharmacists…).
