Course contents : The course bears on distant literary echoes of the major trauma of the Great War.
Course objective : The historical context of the Great War and the relationship betweren colonies and the metropolis will first be examined. We will then turn to a number of novels and some poems by writers who did not participate in the war.
Prerequisites : A good knowledge of English.
Workshops : Students are invited to actively participate.
Organization : The course will be taught in the 2nd part of the year, in room A2/6/11, on Tuesdays from 11 to 1.
Written notes : Copies of poems will be handed out in class.
Novels considered will be:
William Boyd, An Ice-Cream War,
Roger McDonald, 1915,
Timothy Findley, The Wars,
Jack Hodgins, Broken Grounds,
Jane Urquhart, The Stonecarvers.
Assessment : Students are expected to hand in an essay of 2,500 to 3,000 words. They also have to take an oral examination.
