| Course contents :
| The course bears on distant literary echoes of the major trauma of the Great War. | |
|  | | |
| Course objective :
| The historical context of the Great War and the relationship betweren colonies and the metropolis will first be examined. We will then turn to a number of novels and some poems by writers who did not participate in the war. | |

| Prerequisites :
| A good knowledge of English. | |
|  | | |
| Workshops :
| Students are invited to actively participate. | |
|  | | |
| Organization :
| The course will be taught in the 2nd part of the year, in room A2/6/11, on Tuesdays from 11 to 1. | |

| Written notes :
| Copies of poems will be handed out in class. Novels considered will be: William Boyd, An Ice-Cream War, Roger McDonald, 1915, Timothy Findley, The Wars, Jack Hodgins, Broken Grounds, Jane Urquhart, The Stonecarvers. | |

| Assessment :
| Students are expected to hand in an essay of 2,500 to 3,000 words. They also have to take an oral examination. | |
