GERM0005-1

Postcolonial civilisations

Duration :45h Th
Credits/ECTS :
1st "licence" in Germanic languages and literatures
Holder(s) :Christine Pagnoulle
Course contents : Historical approach to, and consideration of the current situation of, former British colonies.
Course objective : After an introduction to European colonisation (using a couple of texts) we consider about eight or nine countries or areas as case studies (in various parts of the world and having experiencedvarious forms of colonisation). While knowing about the political and economic situation is essential (notably the rate of indebtedness, the actual dependence on foreign countries or international institutions) we cannot ignore such vital aspects of cultural diversity as music and food. Literary texts are also used to shed light on past and present living conditions.
Prerequisites : A good knowledge of English.
Workshops : Since the course is not taken by many students these are actively involved from the start. Although I provide the learning material they need and act as a guide during the first weeks, they are invited to take on an ever greater responsibility, starting with the collect of material and culminating in the presentation of a country or area (including music and cooking).
Organization : To be decided on with interested students.
First contact meeting on Tuesday 21 at 1.15 in room A2/6/11.
Written notes : Among written sources we use guidebooks, economic surveys, literary texts, but also a number of regularly updated websites such as the CIA fact sheets and some newspapers' websites.
Assessment : In the second part of the course each student introduces an area or country to the group. This presentation is assessed, as is an essay (2,500 to 10,000 words) on a particular issue he or she has investigated. The oral examen bears on the essay and the course in general.
