ENVT0716-1

Environmental chemical risks

Duration :15h Th
Credits/ECTS :
1st "licence" in public health sciences: promotion of health orientation (environment)3
Holder(s) :Jean De Graeve
Course contents : Overview

This second level of education in environmental toxicology starts with a survey of the problems encountered in air pollution and the application of the concepts developed in the preliminary course. The second part is dedicated to the comprehension and the applicability of complementary tools involved in the approach of chemical risk assessment : laboratory data, biomarkers, data handling and management in dose-response relationships, applicability of mathematical models, identification and utilization of web based resources of information … The course ends with a preliminary survey of the various steps involved in risk assessment methodology : hazard identification (selection of a few crucial parameters), identification of the sources of pollution, determination of the exposure pathways (and vectors), quantification of the exposure levels and risk characterization by comparison with reference established values (differentiated according to the type of dose-response : with and without a threshold level).

Objectives

The main objective is to continue the education in environmental toxicology by guiding the students to correctly use the numerous information resources and models implicated into the risk assessment calculations, a fundamental aspect and requirement to enhance life quality for all. The limitations of the different tools are also covered.
