5th year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in physics6
Holder(s) :Benoît Vanderheyden
Course contents : Heterostructures, electrical and optical properties of low-dimensional semiconductor devices (MODFET, quantum wells, quantum wires and quantum dots), tunnel effect, mesoscopic effects, and nanometric size devices.
Course objective : To understand the fundamental limits of current electronic devices and to introduce a few physics principles that might be applied in future electronic devices.
Prerequisites : The physics of electronic devices at the level of ELEN0004-1.
Workshops : An assignement by groups of two (litterature search, numerical simulations, ...), to be presented orally.
Organization : Lectures are scheduled for the second semester.
Written notes : Slides (a copy is available via the lecturer). Texbook: Davies, The Physics of Low-dimensional Semiconductors (Cambridge).
Assessment : Oral presentation of the group's assignment. Oral exam on the lectures
(theory).
