Electric Power Systems (Dynamic Aspects)

Duration :30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
5th year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in electricity (electronics)6,5
5th year of the 5 year degree in civil engineering in electricity (systèmes d'énergie électrique)6,5
Holder(s) :Thierry Van Cutsem
Course contents : 1st part : Modelling of components and controls
  • Dynamics of the synchronous machine, its electromagnetic transients
  • Power system modelling under the quasi-sinuosidal (or phasor) approximation
  • induction machine
  • turbines and speed governors
  • automatic voltage regulators, field current limiters
  • static var compensators
  • series compensation : fixed and variable (TCSC).

2nd part. Stability
  • stability of electric power systems : definitions, links with notions from system theory
  • small-signal angle stability : analysis of the one-machine infinite-bus system, as well as of large systems, modal analysis. Stability improvement : design of controllers aimed at damping oscillations, in particular the power system stabiliser
  • transient angle stability : analysis (equal area criterion) and improvement
  • frequency stability
  • voltage stability : analysis of short- and long-term voltage collapse scenarios, stability improvement. Demonstration of the ASTRE software.
Course objective : Graduate course dealing with Power System Dynamics : modelling, control and stability.
Prerequisites : ELEC029 or an equivalent course
Workshops : Examples from a SIMULINK (MATLAB) power system library are incorporated to the lectures. A personal assignment is requested, using that tool.
Organization : Course taught at the first and/or second term, according to the audience
Written notes : Detailed lecture notes available on paper or in electronic (PDF) format
Assessment : A personal assignment is given to the student, which deals with various parts of the course and requires to use the SIMULINK power system library. A written report is requested with possibly an oral presentation.
