CHIM0209-1

Inorganic chemistry

Duration :30h Th, 76h Pr, 10h REPE, 1half-d Vis. us.
Credits/ECTS :
1st "licence" chemical sciences8
Holder(s) :André Rulmont
Course contents : The course tackles the following concepts through many examples with emphasis stressed on the structure-properties realtionships. Some industrial processess are also discussed.

1- Properties and preparation methods of the elements.
2- Structural chemistry of inorganic compounds :
Geometric and thermodynamical aspects,
Description of the main structure types
Introduction to the coordination compounds

3- Reactivity of the elements : oxides, sulphides, halogenides and hydrides : synthesis and structure.

4- Chemical reactions in solutions.
Course objective : This course intends to teach to the students the main tools to be able to perform synthesis of inorganic compounds and materials by integrating all the structure-properties aspects. They are expected to learn how the existing chemical processes works and how to design new materials.
Prerequisites : - basic knowledge in crystallography, thermodynamic, general and analytical chemistry.
Organization : Theoretical course : 2 lectures of 2 hours during 15 weeks of the second quadrimestre.
Laboratories : they are organized during the first month of the first quadrimestre. The emphasis is put on the personal work : the student has to show initiative and develop abilities to undergo a research project. Moreover, he has to present his work orally in front of all the other students.
A visit of a chemical factory is organized in order to show to the students the kind of problems which arise in the scaling up of laboratory chemical processes.
Written notes : A detailed lecture textbook and a laboratory manual is available with a complete bibliography.
Assessment : The final mark involves the part related to the laboratories (5) and the part assigned to the oral examination (15)

At the oral examination, each student have the time to prepare his question before to present his conclusions orally.

Furthermore, he has to perform a written presentation on a subject choosen in agreement with the professor in which he discusses a more specific problem by using the concepts developped during the lessons. The first question of the final examination is related to that work.
