BOTA0321-1

Introduction to pharmacognosis through botany, partim B: biotechnology

Duration :10h Th, 5h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
2nd "candidature" in pharmaceutical sciences2
Holder(s) :Vincent Demoulin, Jacques Dommes
Course contents : 90 minutes are dedicated to mushrooms used in industrial pharmaceutical fermentations. (mainly yeast and filamentous mushrooms of the ascomycetes group).
60 minutes are dedicated to isolation, characterization, and strain culture methods in mycology.
3 hours are dedicated to a refresher in genetics which is required for a good understanding of genetic engineering and its application to mushrooms, especially in the production of recombinant proteins.
90 minutes are dedicated to the basics of vegetal physiology and their application to the propagation of vegetal organisms (including in vitro techniques).
90 minutes are dedicated to genetic engineering of superior plants and its application in the production of molecules.
90 minutes are dedicated to the presentation of examples of genetic engineering and associated legal issues.
Course objective : The course introduces students to current or future drug production methods using plants (including mushrooms, but excluding bacteriae).
Prerequisites : Partim A and biochemistry and genetics basics.
Workshops : The sessions are divided into the following modules: (1) preparation of mushrooms and superior plant cell cultures as well as genetic engineering demos (2 hours(, (2) examination of mushroom cultures (90 minutes) (3) examination of superior plant in vitro cultures and demos (90 minutes).
Organization : Lectures (theory):
Wednesday morning, the first 2 courses will take place from 8.45 to 12.00 - Ancien Institut de Botanique (MLE), rue Fusch, 3 - 4000 Liège (Rotonde classée, côté rue Louvrex). The following courses will take place on Wednesday morning at the teaching hall of the Institut de Botanique B.22, Sart Tilman.

Practical Exercises:
Wednesday afternoon (detailed schedule tbd), unless specified otherwise, at the Institut de Botanique B.22, Sart Tilman (salle de TP, level –1).
Written notes : Partial notes (full for mushrooms) with illustrations will be provided.

Reference books:
The UD Botanique has several interesting works, but they are not necessary for the course.
Assessment : Written exam. The grade obtained for the practical exercises report represents 1/4 of the final grade.
A single grade is allocated for both parts of the Botanical introduction to pharmacognosy course. Part A represents 2/3 and partim B 1/3 of this grade. Regardless of the average, a serious failure in one partim will imply at least a failing grade for the total.
