Ultrastructural Biochemistry

Duration :15h Th
Credits/ECTS :
2nd "licence" in biochemical sciences2
Holder(s) :Guy Dandrifosse
Course contents : - Description of the molecular structure and of the supramolecular organisation of cellular organelles. Metabolic relations existing between cellular organelles. Synthesis and degradation of cellular organelles.
- Analysis technics of cellular components.
- Endoplasmic reticulum (proteins, lipids, glycanisation)
- Golgi apparatus
- Lysosomes (including phenomena of membrane fusion i.e. endocytosis and exocytosis)
- Peroxysomes
- Digestive enzyme secretion
- Protein degradation (among others: proteasomes and apoptosis)
Course objective : - To give an information of the metabolic sequence distribution in organelles,
- To give an information on the association of molecules among themselves in organelles,
- To explain how is renewed the molecules contained in the main organelles,
- To give an information on the technical means used to obtain the information cited above,
- To give the constraints, the limits and the critisisms concerning these methods,
- To develop the critical mind of the students by giving the pro and contra concerning the conclusions based on the results given above.
Prerequisites : General biology , general cytology, general biochemistry, general physiology
Organization : Optional courses of the 2nd "licence en Biochimie" and of the DES in biomedical Sciences (15 h.). The course is usually given at the 2nd semester. It often begins one week before the Easter Holidays and it ends two weeks after the latter. It is given in function of the possibilities of the teacher and of the students at this period of the year with a maximal duration of 3 hours by day. The local used is often the room 2/71 of the Chemistry Institute (B6c).
Written notes : Photocopies of each document used during the course are at the sudents' disposal. "Princeps" papers are also given. Some of the photocopies or of these papers allow to go deeply into the content of the course for the students who wish it. The exams allow to make general comments on matters expounded, generally examined from photocopies during the course. The students are often invited to comment one of these photocopies (photocopies draw lots).
Assessment : Oral or written exams at the students' wish
