[partim: Difficult Beauty: Contemporary American Literature and Culture]
"The impulse of modern art," Barnett Newman summarized, "is the desire to destroy beauty." Since the mid-century, American artists of all sorts have expressed a renewed curiosity about beauty; their impulse has been to explore its various meanings, to grapple with and express its difficulties. While some authors suspect that a close attention to beauty reflects an indifference to suffering, others assert that it inspires a desire for social justice. To clarify this situation, this seminar will place poems and novels within American culture's debates about aesthetics, considering art's obligations to its age. | |
